The Sandhills Community College volleyball team improved to 19-4 with a pair of sweeps against NJCAA Division I opponents in Lancaster, SC on Saturday afternoon.
The Lady Flyers defeated host USC Lancaster 25-19, 25-23 and 27-23 in three hotly contested sets in the opener of a tri-match that began at noon. They completed the successful day with a 25-13, 25-9 and 25-16 victory over Andrew College of Cuthbert, GA.
Coach Alicia Riggan's No. 8 ranked in DIII squad takes a 10 match winning streak, and a 1-0 record in Region 10, into a 6 p.m. conference match on Tuesday against Central Carolina CC (1-2, 2-8) in Sanford.
The next home date is another conference match against Patrick and Henry CC at 6 p.m. on Thursday.
The Lady Flyers trailed throughout most of the first set against the home-standing Lancers before scoring the final four points to take the 1-0 lead. A kill by Cassidy Jewett wrapped up the second set, and trailing 25-24 in the third, they needed a late tying kill by Caroline Bradford before going on to complete the sweep.
Bradford led the winners with 10 kills followed by Jenna Luquer with eight. Setters Sydney Garner and Mariana Clayton were each credited with 15 assists. Libero Lainey Mullins led the way in digs with 21 and Kristin Dodds added three block solos to the cause.
The Flyers took command early in the second match against the team from Georgia. Bradford was successful on more than half of her attacks while recording a team-high 12 kills. Other leaders included Mullins with five service aces, Garner with 21 assists and Nikki Lambert with 13 digs.
