June 15, 2017, Record Breaking Year, Awards Abound (Letter from the AD)
Dear Flyer Faithful,
While many look at the start of summer as a time to relax, our programs are pulling double and triple duty. Our coaches are ensuring sophomores are moving on, freshman are performing well in summer classes (some coaches are teaching classes) and most importantly the incoming freshmen are ready to go. As you might imagine there is always a lot of work when your roster is new every two or three years. By the way - mark your calendars because the 2017 volleyball schedule is live here!
Oh, The Places You Will Go
You will be hard pressed to find a more exciting time of year around a college campus than graduation. We enjoyed our second annual student-athlete graduate breakfast with seven of our nine graduates. And what a group they are! In addition to bacon and eggs each grad received an SCC tumbler and book entitled, "Chase The Lion" by Mark Batterson.
Three of our four teams (volleyball, women's golf, basketball) earned recognition by the NJCAA for acheiving average GPA's of 3.0 or higher for the 2017-18 academic year. This is the second time in three years that three of our four teams have accomplished the feat.
Men's basketball led the way with five graduates including SCC athletic's first Faculty Award winner, Zezva Liluashvili. The award was presented to Zezva during graduation exercises. Voted on by the faculty, the award represents the highest honor for a member of the graduating class.
Not to be undone, the other members of the basketball team are also well decorated. All five will continue their basketball careers at four-year institutions with four earning scholarships. Zezva (Aquinas College), Christian Lathan (St. Andrews), Jeremias Easterling (St. Andrews), D'Angelo Harris (Fayetteville State) and Josh Smith (Fayetteville State) will give the Flyer faithful reasons to travel for the next few seasons.
Academic contributions came from all across our teams with three earning NJCAA All-Academic Team honors. Freshman volleyball libero and Nursing major Erica Groff earned First Team NJCAA All-Academic honors with a perfect 4.0 while Parker Watson (W Golf) and Zezva Liluashvili grabbed Third Team NJCAA All-Academic accolades.
Tradition Never Graduates
Our men's golf team just wrapped another successful slate earning a 6th place finish at the NJCAA National Tournament. The Flyers squad's fifth consecutive trip to Chautauqua, NY coincided with their fifth straight Region X crown and Coach Gus Ulrich's fifth straight Region X coach of the year honors. SCC has earned seven of the possible nine Region X titles since the Flyers took off in the 2008-09 school year.
For the ninth time in our nine seasons as a Flyers athletic program SCC produced an All-American. Jeremias earned NJCAA All-American laurels and garnerd a trip to the NJCAA All-Star game in Las Vegas, NV. Josh Smith was recently named the 2016-17 Louis M. Brown, Sr. Student-Athlete of the Year.
Spike It Like It's Hot
The 7th annual sand volleyball tournament was for sure hot but also by far the best yet! Twenty+ teams from the area filled up both sand courts all day Saturday, May 20. The tournament continues to grow in both numbers and community support. Food trucks and the Kona Ice van don't hurt either. Don't miss this chance to support our volleyball team next year.
Summer Camp
There are still spots available for our first full slate of summer camps. The action includes Mike Apple's Basketball Camp (June 26-29), Alicia Riggan's Volleyball Camps (July 14-15, July 17-20) and our All-Sports Camps (July 10-14, July 24-28, July 31-August 4). Off and Running, Literally
In just a month and a half Sandhills will add it's first sport since the original four were introduced as the Flyers program in the Fall of 2008. Cross Country takes off on August 1st and a healthy group of runners is set to take the trails of Moore County (and beyond) by storm. There was such a positive and overwhelming response for running we've added a few Track & Field athletes ahead of schedule. The original timeline included running our cross country athletes in some track meets in the Spring semester. The number of interested students for track & field allowed us to go ahead and start with a smaller track team in the 2017-18 year with plans to recruit and run a full program in 2018-19. Enjoy some of our new faces below - many more to come!
