Martin and Ahing Top the Leaderboards as Flyers' Men and Women Compete in Local Tournaments

Martin and Ahing Top the Leaderboards as Flyers' Men and Women Compete in Local Tournaments

Competing in tournaments at golf courses located just eight miles from each other on Friday, the Sandhills Community College men's and women's golf teams dodged the raindrops and produced some impressive opening round results.

The Flyers' Alex Martin made eight birdies on the way to a 4-under par 68 that leads a field of 54 golfers from nine teams at the Laker Spring Shootout held at the Foxfire Resort and Golf Club, Red Fox course.  Teammate Ben Read was close behind in second place individually with a 69.

Combined with a 74 by Adam Hathaway, and a 76 by Watcharakan Chankarn, the Flyers' 1-under par team score of 287 leads second place University of Mount Olive by 18 strokes.

Earlier in the day at the Golden Knight Carolina Classic held at Beacon Ridge Golf and Country Club in West End, Trinity Ahing of the Lady Flyers posted a 1-over par 73 for a two-stroke lead over Emma McCloskey of Trevecca Nazarene University in a field of 68 golfers.

Ava Ray, who posted an 87, and Lindsay McAulay also represented the Lady Flyers, but Coach Herb Pike's squad did not have the required four players to post a team result. Host Gannon University (PA) takes a six-stroke lead over Ohio Dominican into Saturday's final round.

Chilly temperatures along with sunny skies are expected when the teams tee off at the respective venues on Saturday morning.

"It was cold and it was rainy," Flyers' Men's Coach Gus Ulrich said of the start of Friday's round that was delayed for two hours because of the conditions. "It was a survival test to start off with and I told them to just hang in there.

"The back nine was good to us. Ben especially really brought his game back and Adam did as well.  Alex just had a really solid round. Those scores really anchored us."

According to Martin, who was the runner-up at the national tournament last June, the weather conditions improved after six or seven holes.

"I did everything well," he said. "I hit the ball super-good and probably hit 15 or 16 greens."

Ulrich is looking forward to better conditions on Saturday.

"We'll have a decent lead and it's a good way for us to go into tomorrow and play a little more freed up, play comfortably and be able to work on some things," he said.

Ahing, who earned medalist honors at the Pfeiffer Spring Invitational 10 days ago, has an opportunity to pick up her second win in a row.

The host colleges of the two tournaments, Mercyhurst and Gannon, are both located in Erie, PA.
