Lady Flyers Win SCC Invite to Complete Fall Season - Ochoa Medalist

Monday and Tuesday were beautiful days for a long walk for Katie Ochoa and the other participants at the Sandhills Community College Invitational held at Legacy Golf Links in Aberdeen.

The Lady Flyer sophomore earned medalist honors with a 36-hole score of 76-80-156 and the Flyers also took first place as a team over Wake Tech. Two golfers from Spartanburg Methodist also competed as individuals.

In the final tournament of the fall season, Ochoa, a Pinecrest High School graduate, posted her lowest score as collegian, including her freshman year as a member of the team at Belmont Abbey.

"It was a very nice day," she said afterward. "It was perfect. I was just out there having fun.

"I want to thank both of my coaches. They have really helped me with my swing, my putting and everything."

The team results were based upon the best three scores from each team. The Flyers prevailed 257-256-513 to 289-283-572 for Wake Tech.

Also for the Flyers, sophomore Taylor Pratte was fifth individually after rounds of 87-93-180, freshman Gracie Church was sixth, 94-88-182 and sophomore Lindsay McCauley was 12th, 124-132-256.

The runner-up individually was Sandy Hsiang of Wake Tech with scores of 85-82-167. Athena Dotsikas of Spartanburg Methodist was third with scores of 87-84-171.

Ochoa led the Flyers with a strokes per round average over the four fall tournaments of 82.6. Pratte was second at 92.9.

Under NJCAA rules, the Lady Flyers will not be allowed to work with coaches Herb Pike and Bonnie McGowan in preparation for the spring season until early in 2020.

Lady Flyer Extra - Former Flyer Danielle Mirovich is a member of a strong Milligan University golf team that finished in second place on Tuesday at the Appalachian Athletic Conference Fall Championship held in Braselton, GA. She finished in a tie for 15th place in the field of 71 golfers and third on her team with scores of 85-80-165.  Two weeks earlier at the East Tennessee Collegiate hosted by Milligan, the junior tied for eighth place after rounds of 76-77-153 and missed making the all-tournament team by one stroke.
