Ochoa third, Lady Flyers Second, at St. Andrews Fall Invite

Ochoa third, Lady Flyers Second, at St. Andrews Fall Invite

Led by Katie Ochoa's third place finish individually, the Sandhills Community College women's golf team came in second at the St. Andrews Fall Invitational that wound up on Monday.

Ochoa shot rounds of 82-88-170 at Scotch Meadows Country Club in Laurinburg. Lydia Randell of St. Andrews earned medalists honors after rounds of 78-81-159. The Lady Flyers finished second to Methodist in the team competition.

An otherwise pretty good day of ball-striking for Ochoa was undone somewhat by problems with the "flatstick".

"I had 40 putts," she said. "That's what got me today and hopefully the next tournament will be a lot better. Overall I still felt pretty good about the way I played."

Also for Coach Herb Pike's squad, Taylor Pratte tied for 11th in the field of 25 golfers with scores of 89-90-179. Gracie Church was 15th after rounds of 96-95-191 and Lindsay McCauley finished 22nd with scores of 130-124-254.

"She can play," Pike said of Ochoa. "Taylor finished with three bogeys, but overall she did about what I expect her to do. Gracie and Lindsay are both getting better."

A Pinecrest High School graduate, Ochoa moved to the area from Manhattan, KS before her sophomore year. She was a member of the 2016 state championship team at Pinecrest and also lettered in track and basketball. She played at Scotch Meadows a number of times in high school.

"It was awesome," she said of the state championship experience after Monday's round. "We finished in second place the other years I was there. It was a lot of fun to be a part of that."

A member of the NCAA Division II Belmont Abbey team last fall and spring, Ochoa transferred to Sandhills because of the nursing program.

"All my professors here are amazing and my coaches are great," she said. "I'm so happy I transferred."

Next for the Lady Flyers is the Sandhills Community College Invitational at Legacy Golf Links in Aberdeen on October 14-15.

Team scores – 1. Methodist 350-336-686, 2. Sandhills – 397-397-794, 3. Columbia College 417-410-827, 4. Meredith College 491-500-991.
