Read Earns Medalist honors, Flyers Second at Mercyhurst Spring Break Shootout

Sandhills Community College sophomore Ben Read birdied the 36th hole early Saturday morning to draw even and then parred the first playoff hole to repeat as the individual champion of the Mercyhurst Spring Break Shootout held at the Foxfire Resort and Golf Club.

In it's bid to repeat as the team champion in a field that included eleven four-year college teams, Coach Gus Ulrich's squad finished in second place, three strokes behind Mount Olive College.

Read (71-68-139) was one of seven golfers in the field of 12 teams required to complete their final three holes of the tournament when darkness prevented the completion of the 36 holes on Friday. Starting at 8 a.m., he and teammate Fifa Chankarn were among those playing through mid-50's temperatures and steady windblown rain.

The tournament runner-up was Rasmus Ronnberg of Mount Olive. Other top 10 finishes for the Flyers were by Austin May, fifth place (71-72-143) and Chankarn (72-73-145), tied for eighth.
