May, Read, Harris and Chankarn Go Low as Flyer Men Soar in Fall Opener

May, Read, Harris and Chankarn Go Low as Flyer Men Soar in Fall Opener

The Sandhills Community College men's golf team picked up from where it left off last June when it won its third NJCAA Division III national title in a row by opening the fall season with a convincing victory at last month's Don Scalf Memorial held at Belmont Lake Country Club in Rocky Mount.

Competing against five four-year colleges, the Flyers finished 49 strokes better than second place Shenandoah University, setting a team record with a 28-under par 36-hole score of 275-273-548. Freshman Austin May (67-67-134) and sophomore Ben Read (69-65-134) both finished at 10-under par, tying for medalist honors.

Freshman Liam Harris (67-72-139) and sophomore Watcharakan Chankarn (72-69-141) finished third and fourth, respectively. The Flyers' fifth player, freshman Evan Cowell, tied for 42nd place with scores of 83-79-162 on the course set up at 6,505 yards.

"It was a pleasant surprise that they can go low like that," Flyers Coach Gus Ulrich said.

Next for the Flyers is the Jack Ingram/Pfeiffer Fall Invitational on Monday and Tuesday at Tillery Tradition Country Club in Mount Gilead.

In the process of winning the program's fourth national title under Ulrich last June in Lake Chautauqua, NY, the Flyers broke the all-time tournament scoring record by 21 strokes, finishing 41 strokes in front of runner-up Georgia Military College.

Read, a native of Banchory, Scotland earned individual honors with a 72-hole score that broke the tournament record by four strokes. Returnees from that team also include Chankarn who earned second team All-American honors with a ninth place finish, Supanat Rujiranan and Nicholas Howard.

In addition to May, who attended high school in Linganore, MD, Harris, a product of Wake Forest High School and Cowell, a Pinecrest High School grad, the newcomers include Daniel Aitken from Aboyne, Scotland, Landon Cabingas, New Bern High School and Randy Hanna, Pinehurst.

Read has already committed to Appalachian State for the 2024-25 season, joining former Flyer teammate Alex Martin, who finished second in Lake Chautauqua last June. Other former Flyers performing at four-year colleges this fall include Andreas Huber and Noah Maness at Greensboro College.
