Six Flyers Finish in Top 10 at Surry CC Fall Invitational - Huber Medalist

Andreas Huber earned medalist honors, helping the Sandhills Community College men's golf team end the fall campaign by taking the team title at the Surry Community College Fall Invitational that concluded on Tuesday.

A freshman from Bruneck, Italy, Huber posted scores of 76-71-147 to finish first by two strokes over Alyssa Cox and Austin Smith of Surry. The Flyers' team score of 304-302-606 was 39 strokes better than second place Surry.

Huber was the third different player in four fall tournaments to lead Coach Gus Ulrich's team in scoring.

"I think it shows we have some depth," the coach said by phone on Wednesday. "Our main goal is to win the national championship and I think this was a positive end to our fall season."

The other scores and places for the Flyers in the field of 24 golfers included Grant Gilbert, fourth (78-74-152), Stephen Spencer, fifth (77-76-153) Carson Witherspoon, sixth (74-81-155), Nick Agapion, tie eighth (78-81-159) and Ted Sluser, tie-10th (82-78-160).

Huber was four-under par on Tuesday before running into a triple bogey. It was still his best tournament as a Flyer.

"Andreas played like I expected him to play," Ulrich said. "I think the round will do a lot for his confidence.

"It was a good couple of days in the mountains at two good golf courses."

Tournament play resumes with the start of the spring season on March 1-2 when the Flyers host the Sandhills CC Spring Intercollegiate at Long Leaf Golf Club in Southern Pines.

Team scores; 1. Sandhills 304-302-606, 2. Surry 325-320-645, 3. USC Sumpter 329-326-655, 4. Davidson County 329-329-658.
