Sandhills Overtaken by Georgia Military in Final Round of Men's Golf Championship

Sandhills Overtaken by Georgia Military in Final Round of Men's Golf Championship

Sandhills Community College was denied in its bid for an NJCAA Division III Men's Golf Championship on Friday when Georgia Military College made up an 11-stroke deficit and nipped the third-round leaders by one stroke.

The Flyers' Trey Capps shot an even-par 72 in the final round to earn medalist honors by six strokes over Georgia Military's Dusty Watts. It was Watts whose four-foot birdie putt on the final hole clinched the title for the Bulldogs at Chautauqua Golf Club in Chautauqua NY.

Capps earned first team All-American honors and teammate Grant Gilbert was an Honorable Mention All-American selection after finishing in 15th place.

"It was a rough day for the team," Flyers' coach Gus Ulrich said. "We got off to a horrible start and finished very poorly.

"The boys handled themselves with pride and dignity in defeat. It was extremely difficult emotionally for everyone. One shot over 72 holes is minute, but the boys were proud and they congratulated the winners. I'm very proud of them."

A product of Garner High School, Capps played for William Peace University as a freshman. He was three over par after nine holes on Friday, but shot three-under on the back. He finished the tournament at four-over par after rounds of 77-73-70-72-292.

Gilbert, a freshman from Porter Ridge High School, shot a 78 on Friday to finish the tournament with scores of 83-78-76-78-315.

Friday's team total of 313 also included an 81 by Ted Sluser and an 82 by Nevin Bullough. Nick Agapion posted an 86.

The Flyers were seeking their second national title in men's golf. The first came in 2014. They were also runner-ups in 2013, 2015 and 2018. Georgia Military also won the national title in 2017.
