Trey Capps of Sandhills Community College scorched the par 70, 6,101 yard Paradise Point Scarlet Course with a pair of 64's in the final two rounds of the 48th Annual Camp Lejeune Intercollegiate Golf Championship that concluded on Sunday.

 

The sophomore from Garner made a total of 12 birdies in a bogey-free final 36 holes. He was the runner-up in the Scarlet Consolation division of the tournament with a 54-hole total of 78-64-64-206. Keith Cooper of Virginia Wesleyan shot 75-63-67-205 to take first by a single stroke.

 

"Trey's goal is to win the national tournament," Flyers' Coach Gus Ulrich said, referring to the NJCAA Division III Championship in Chautauqua, NY on June 4-7. "He's stepping up and his work is paying off."

 

Under the format of the tournament, each of the 29 teams played a round on the Gold Course (Par, 73, 6,926 yards) and the Scarlet Course on Friday and Saturday. On Sunday, the14 with the lowest two-day totals competed for the overall championship on the Gold Course. Methodist won the title for the fourth year in a row by eight strokes over runner-ups North Carolina Wesleyan and Hampden-Sydney.

 

The Flyers finished second to Lynchburg University in the 15-team consolation division with a score of 323-275-279-877. The second round total of 275 was tied for the fifth best score by any of the 29 teams. The only individual scores lower than Capp's 64's in the field of 142 golfers were rounds of 63 by Cooper and overall medalist Larkin Gross of Methodist.

 

Also for the Flyers, Nick Agapion tied for 8th place with scores of 79-68-72-219. Ted Sluser matched Capps with a pair of under par scores on the Scarlet Course. His rounds of 83-69-69-221 put him in a tie for 12th.

 

Grant Gilbert, 83-74-74-231 tied for 29th and Noa Bullough, 85-78-76-239 tied for 44th place.

 

Ulrich said that his players enjoyed the experience of having a military person in their threesomes on the first two days of the tournament.

 

"I was happy overall," he said. "Even though the Scarlet Course was a par 70 it was probably the two lowest scores we've ever had. Ted put a couple of good rounds together. I've always known he has the talent."

 

This week the Flyers are tuning up for the Region X Championship next Monday and Tuesday. The first round will be played at Country Club of Whispering Pines and the second at Sanford Golf Club.
