The Sandhills men trailed the Methodist "B" team by five strokes after Sunday's opening round of the Spring Eagle's Cup Golf Tournament in Raleigh. The Monarchs (306-296-602) went low on Monday and went on to win the event by 23 strokes over the second place Flyers (311-314-625).

Four members of Coach Gus Ulrich's squad finished with 36-hole scores that were within one stroke of each other. Ted Sluser (80-76-156) and Trey Capps (78-78-156) tied for sixth place, individually. Grant Gilbert (76-81-157) and Nick Agapion (77--80-157) tied for eighth place. Also for the Flyers, Noa Bullough (83-80-163) finished 14th in the field of 27 golfers.

The medalist from the Methodist squad that included two members of the Monarchs' 2018 NCAA Division III National Championship team was junior Lucas Spahl (73-73-146).

Patrick Henry CC (339-333-672), host Wake Tech (349-351- 700) and Richard Bland (352-359-711) were the other teams in the tournament held at Eagle Ridge Golf Club. Two players from Davidson County CC competed as individuals.

"It was a little windy and a little cold and we didn't play very well," Ulrich said on Tuesday.

The coach and his players are looking forward to the 48th Annual Camp Lejeune Intercollegiate, a 54-hole event held at Paradise Point Golf Course in Jacksonville. It begins on Thursday with a practice round.

The Flyers finished 12th among 30 teams in the tournament won by Methodist a year ago. Hunter Oxendine (74-70-144) finished in a tie for 14th place to lead the Flyers in the field of 150 golfers.

A purpose of the event first held in 1972 was to expose college students to the military environment. Playing on two different courses, the format for the first two rounds is a 3-person/best ball with two collegians paired with a retired or active member of the military.

"It's a nice event and this is probably our sixth year in a row going there," Ulrich said. "It adds a nice flavor with our guys being able to interact with guys from the military."
