Second place finishes at the Sandhills Flyer Spring Intercollegiate by both Nick Agapion, individually, and the Flyer men team, highlighted the first golf event of the spring season.

Agapion, a freshman from Gaffney, S.C. posted an even-par round of 71 at Mid South Club on Sunday and a 76 at Talamore Golf Club on Monday for a 147 total. Grayson Crawford of Spartanburg Methodist shot 73-73-146 to gain medalist honors by one stroke.

The Methodist University "B" team finished in first place (294-304-598) followed by the Flyers (299-310-609) and Spartanburg Methodist (309-305-614). The fourth through seventh place teams were Surry CC (627, total), Fayetteville State (644), Wake Tech (775) and Johnston County CC (805).

Others contributing to the team score for Coach Gus Ulrich's squad were Grant Gilbert, who finished in a three-way tie for fifth place (77-74-151), followed by Trey Capps, ninth (72-80-152) and Ted Sluser,T-17 (79-80-159). Nevin Bullough shot rounds of 90-80-170 to complete the Flyer lineup.

Playing in the same threesome on Monday, the battle for medalist honors between Agapion and Crawford came down to the 426-yard par four 18th at Talamore.  Agapion made a nice par save on 16, but missed a short putt for par on the 17.

His approach shot on 18 put him within 20-feet of the flag, but Crawford edged him out when both settled for pars.

"It just wasn't a good stroke at all," Agapion said of the miss on 17. "It's not the outcome I really wanted, but second is not too bad. I've just been grinding and putting in a lot of work so it's good to see results."

Ulrich thinks Agapion will grow from the experience.

"I know Nick wishes he could have that putt back on 17," the coach said. "He was out there trying for first place against a good field. It was a great start for him."

Considering that there was some precipitation during Sunday's round, the Flyer coach was pleased with his team's first day score of 299.  Heavy nighttime rains that created muddy spots on the course, and temperatures in the 40's at the start, made the conditions on Monday less than ideal.

"We've got some work to do, but overall I'm pretty happy with our start of the season," Ulrich said. "I was tickled with yesterday's round under pretty tough conditions against pretty tough competition."
