Friday's Lady Flyer Scrimmages to be Live Streamed from Surry CC

The Sandhills Community College volleyball team travels to Dobson, NC on Friday for scrimmages against host Surry Community College at 2 p.m. and Davidson County CC at 4 p.m.

Following almost two months of workouts, the Lady Flyers scrimmaged Catawba Valley CC and USC Lancaster CC at The Hangar last Saturday. No spectators were allowed. The regular season that was postponed because of Covid 19 is scheduled to begin with a home match against Pitt Community College on Saturday, January 23.

"I was excited and nervous for the girls to be back in the gym not just playing against each other," Flyers' Head Coach Alicia Riggan said. "I was also nervous for Covid and all the protocols and having people from the outside in our facility.

"I thought everybody did a phenomenal job following the process of taking temperatures and washing up. The other two coaches were very appreciative of our hosting. They felt it was run very well and felt comfortable the entire time."

A Catawba Valley squad that included key players from the team that was undefeated in its conference and competed at the NJCAA Division II National Championship last season held the upper hand over Saturday's two opponents. Because of injuries, USC Lancaster, also a Division II team, came with only five players.

"I knew they were going to be very tough," Riggan said of Catawba Valley, "but I think it was good for our team to see strong competition. Our girls hadn't played in a competitive game since October of last year. They did a lot of good stuff. They all got experience and realize we have a lot of work to put in.

"It was a great opportunity to try different rotations. I don't think we found the correct one until the last games against Catawba Valley."

The returnees on this season's squad include Morrigan Denman, Mya Sencenbaugh, Camryn Lowe, Khaile Jones, Christen Clontz, Alexus McCrimmon and Carley Modlin. The freshmen are Abby Quick, Brooke Anne Fryar, Mya Mallard and Mariah Daffron.

Riggan is being assisted by Kristin Hylton, Jacob Marley, Lindsay McMannon and Jordan Ward.
