Flyers Top National Competition in Thrilling Playoff to Win 52nd Annual Camp Lejeune Intercollegiate

In a field stacked with nationally ranked NCAA Division III programs, the Sandhills Community College men's golf team made a statement, capturing the team title at the 52nd Annual Camp Lejeune Intercollegiate. The Flyers finished tied with Shenandoah University at +9 (873) through 54 holes, then claimed the championship in a team playoff to secure their fourth tournament win of the 2024-25 season.
The Flyers edged out a 24-team field that included 10 teams ranked or receiving votes in the latest Bushnell/Golfweek Division III Coaches Poll, including No. 4 Illinois Wesleyan, No. 6 Oglethorpe, No. 13 Guilford, No. 22 Averett, and receiving-votes Skidmore. In a dramatic finale, all five players from both Sandhills and Shenandoah replayed the first and ninth holes in a team playoff format.
Individually, Sandhills was led by Landon Cabingas and Evan Cowell, who each posted a +2 total of 218 to tie for 12th place. Cabingas fired a clutch final-round 70 (-2), while Cowell's opening-round 69 helped set the tone for the Flyers' tournament. Will Mitchell (+3, T-14), Vegas Melen (+7, T-33), and Wyatt Beaver (+7, T-33) rounded out a balanced team effort where all five golfers finished inside the top half of the leaderboard.
The win underscores Sandhills' ability to not only compete but thrive against top-tier NCAA competition. The Flyers' consistency—posting rounds of 287, 292, and 294—was key in staying ahead of perennial powers like Guilford (+11), Oglethorpe (+15), and Franklin & Marshall (+18).
The Flyers will look to carry their momentum into the final stretch of the season with their eyes set firmly on postseason success.
