Lady Flyers Sign Amya Curtis of Voyager Academy
Amya Paige Curtis of Voyager Academy in Durham has committed to play volleyball at Sandhills Community College this fall.
A 5-foot-8 defensive specialist and libero, she was a high school teammate of Lady Flyer freshman Mariah Daffron during the 2019 season. Voyage Academy canceled its 2020 season because of Covid, but Curtis continued playing for the D.O.V.E Volleyball Club team, also in Durham.
She is also a member of the softball team at Voyager Academy this spring.
Daffron provided a former teammate's perspective on what Curtis will bring to the Lady Flyers.
"Amya has one of the strongest serves I've seen," Daffron says. "She has great hustle and goes after every ball. She has a big heart for all of her sports and a big heart in general.
"She just brings so much to the table. I think it will be a good year with her."
Curtis has been playing volleyball for five years. She will pursue an associate in arts degree at Sandhills. She indicated she was impressed with the environment at Sandhills and the energy of the players and coaches.
"We are excited to welcome Amya," Lady Flyers' Coach Alicia Riggan said. "She will bring quickness to our backline and we are excited to have her join our Flyer family."
