Efficient Lady Flyers Seek Fifth Win in a Row
The Sandhills Community College volleyball team will be seeking its fifth win in a row when it entertains the St. Andrews junior varsity Monday evening at 6 p.m. at Heins Gymnasium.
The Lady Flyers improved to 6-4 overall, and 2-0 in Region X, with a 25-12, 25-5 and 25-16 conference win at Rockingham CC on Saturday. It was their third road success, all sweeps, in a period of five days.
Coach Alicia Riggan's squad was particularly efficient in Saturday's match. Their 34 kills came with only four attack errors. Setter Leah Salzwedel was credited with 32 assists. The leaders in kills were Morgan McCarthy with 11, Chandler Adams with eight and Holly Martindale and Paige Garner with five each. Erica Groff and Adams each contributed 13 digs and Martindale had 10.
Salzwedel replaced Cheyenne Brown at setter for the second match in a row. Brown was injured while warming up prior to Thursday's match at Guilford Tech.
"The girls played really well today," Riggan said. "Leah stepped up and looked really good setting. Erica and Leah were serving machines with four aces each. This was another great opportunity to play everyone and get another conference win."
The Lady Flyers defeated St. Andrews 3-2 in Laurinburg about three weeks ago. Another busy week continues with a key conference match at home against Davidson County CC on Wednesday at 6 p.m. and a doubleheader at Danville CC on Saturday.
