Third Season of Cross Country at Sandhills Underway - Canady sets Lady Flyer Record

Third Season of Cross Country at Sandhills Underway - Canady sets Lady Flyer Record

Sophomore Hannah Canady established a Sandhills Community College record in the 5K run at last week's Adidas Cross Country Challenge held at Wake Med Soccer Park in Cary.

In their first meet of the season, the Flyer ladies and men both competed in the Red (Non-Division I) races in the two-day event involving college and high school teams.

With only two contestants, the Lady Flyers did not post a team score. The N.C. State Club team was the men's race winner with the Flyers finishing fifth in the field of seven teams.

Brian Odom, a freshman from South View High School, was first in for the Flyers in the men's race, finishing in 36th place with a time of 17:49.5. He was followed in by Luke Owen of Whispering Pines, the team's lone returnee, in 43rd place (18:30.5).

Luke Tillis of Williamsburg, VA, 48th place (18:53.8), Cristian Sanchez of Tuscon, Ariz., 59th (20:32.6) and Hayden Lynch of Queen's Grant High School in Matthews, NC, 61st (20:43.5) were the other runners representing the Flyers.

Canady, and Brianna Spencer, another sophomore, were competing in cross country for Sandhills for the first time. Both distinguished themselves at the NJCAA National Track and Field Championships last June where Spencer earned Honorable Mention All-American honors with a third place finish in the 1,500 meter run and Canady was fourth in the 10,000 meter race.

At the Adidas XC Challenge, Canady finished in 23rd place. Her time of 21:25.8 broke the team record set by Karen Munoz in the first year of the cross country program at Sandhills in 2017. Spencer finished 29th in 22:06.7.

The Sandhills teams will return to Wake Med Soccer Park on Saturday, October 5 for the Great American Cross Country Festival. Tim Nocton is the head coach of the Flyers. He is being assisted by Jef Moody, the head coach in the first two years of the cross country program at Sandhills.

Team results – Men – 1. NC State Club 15, 2. Bull City Club 66, 3. Methodist 69, 4. Shaw 137, 5. Sandhills CC 145, 6. William Peace 146, 7. Fayetteville State 160.
