Flyer Men second, Ladies third, at Hagan Stone Classic

The Sandhills Community College men's cross country team finished in second place, and the women came in third, on Saturday at the Hagan Stone Classic held at Hagan Stone Park near Greensboro.

Less than three seconds separated Union Pines High School graduate Daniel Taylor from taking first place for the Flyers for the second meet in a row. Next for Coach Jef Moody's squad were a trio of former South View High School runners in Daniel Hagen, Jordan Anneheim and Chance Goodman in the sixth through eighth positions. Also making up the Flyers' team score of 35 was Andrew Bowen in 13th place.

Karen Munoz led the Lady Flyers with a seventh place finish. Teammates Enya Dewars, 12th, Sofie Flores, 15th, Sara Lindell, 16th and Izzabella McNeil, 19th, were the other four runners figuring in the team score.

All of the runners from NCAA Division I, II and III, and junior college teams, ran together. The Flyer men and women were placed in the NCAA Division III groups of five teams to determine team and individual places.

All but one of the Flyer men, and three of the Flyer ladies, recorded their best times of the season.

This week in practice Moody intends put an emphasis on the five points in the team score that separated the men from Southern Virginia and the cross country program's first team trophy.

"I'm hoping that makes them hungry," the coach said. "That's what we're here for, to win championships. The goal is to get at least five runners under 28 minutes. Right now we have six under 30. They really raced well today. Now the hard work starts."

Goodman credited teamwork with helping him attain his PR for an 8K race.

"I started falling back and my teammates Daniel (Hagen) and Jordan helped me push through," he said. "I couldn't have done it without them. It was amazing. I loved it."

Some members of the team will participate in the SCC Flyers Fun Rock and Run as a part of the college's homecoming celebration at 10 a.m. on Saturday. The Region X championship will be held at Spartanburg Methodist in South Carolina on October 20.
