Bio

Markell Lotharp returns for his third season as a coach with the Flyers. Coach Lotharp has a passion for player development, brings a wealth of player knowledge and energy to the Flyers staff.

Coach Lotharp joined his 2012 NJCAA Champion teammates, coaches Daquan Towns and Tramaine Pride mid way into the 2021-22 season after a career at The Boys and Girls Club of Sandhills as the Teen Services Director.

Lotharp was a member of the basketball team at Johnson C. Smith University for two seasons (2013-14,2014-15) before earning a bachelor’s degree in Sports Management.

Prior to his career at Johnson C. Smith Sandhills, Markell Lotharp earned All-American honors in 2012 as a member of the first team in the Flyers' era of athletics at Sandhills Community College to win a national championship.

In his first season at Sandhills he helped Head Coach Aaron Denton's team compile a record of 24-7 and earned 2011 All-Freshman Honors.

As a sophomore, Lotharp led the 2012 title team in scoring (15.9 points per game) and in rebounds (6.7). The Flyers finished with a record of 30-6 in Mike Apple's first season as head coach. He earned the 2012 NJCAA All-American, NJCAA All-Star Game, 2012 All NJCAA National Tournament Team, NJCAA National Player of the Week, 2012 Region X First Team

Lotharp was the recipient of the 2012 Louis M. Brown, Sr. Award for Excellence in Athletics presented annually to the outstanding student/athlete at Sandhills. 

Coach Lotharp works and manages the game room in the Dempsey Center. He currently resides in Pinehurst with his family.
