Flyers Host Fayetteville Tech in Basketball Scrimmage
The Sandhills Community College men's basketball team makes it's first home appearance of the 2023-24 season in a scrimmage against Fayetteville Tech, beginning at 7 p.m. on Tuesday at The Hangar.
Coach Mike Apple's squad saw its first game action on Saturday when it scrimmaged Mid-Atlantic Christian University and Louisburg College in Louisburg.
The roster of 21 players, that includes four returnees from last season's NJCAA Division III national championship runner ups, was split in two as the Flyers were defeated in both of the competitive games.
"In a scrimmage after seven practices, you see a lot of things that are weaknesses right now, but they won't be weaknesses eventually," Apple said on Thursday. "The biggest thing is we need a lot of repetitions and practice, playing college basketball. The guys are talented, they're just not used to what they're seeing at the college level yet, and practice will help that."
Preseason play also includes participation in the Brunswick CC JUCO Prep Jamboree in Bolivia, NC this Saturday and a final warm-up at home against Rockhill Community Christian on Wednesday, October 25.
Members of last year's squad include guards Jamori McDougald and Chad Kinch, and forwards Ayden Gittens and Jamal Williams. Forward Isaiah Nelson, who red-shirted a year ago, was a member of the 2021-2022 squad that also qualified for the national tournament.
The Flyers are scheduled to open the regular season at the Statesmen Classic on November 3 and 4 with games against the Winston-Salem Christian post graduate team on Friday and host Richard Bland on Saturday in Glen Allen, VA.
