Flyers Fall to Undefeated Cobras
The Sandhills Community College basketball team fell short in its bid to knock Caldwell Tech from the undefeated ranks, falling 95-72 on Saturday afternoon in Hudson.
The No.2 ranked Flyers (Division III) dropped to 16-2 while the No. 13 Cobras (Division I) improved to 16-0. Coach Mike Apple's squad completes a stretch of three consecutive road games with a contest against the Francis Marion junior varsity at 7 p.m. on Thursday in Florence, SC.
The Flyers will be back at The Hangar on Saturday at 3 p.m. in a Region 10 clash against Johnston CC.
A jumper by Elijah Idlett gave the Flyers an early 10-6 lead against the Cobras. They led for the last time in the game at 12-10 moments later on a basket in transition by Charles Thomas.
Threes by Nathan Yow and Winston Bryan helped keep them close before a 12-3 run got the home team going on the way to a 50-33 lead at the intermission.
Trailing 68-46 midway through the second half, seven points in a row by Bryan, and a basket by Evan Davis on an inbound pass from Idlett, added up to a 9-2 run that made it 70-55 before the Cobras pulled away again.
Sayaun Dent led the Flyers with 16 points and Idlett added 14. Bryan scored 10 and the 6-foot-1 sophomore was credited with a team-high seven rebounds and a team-best four assists. The Flyers were 4-for-21 from beyond the arc in one of their poorest shooting games of the season.
