Chick-Fil-A Cross Country Invitational

Chick-Fil-A Cross Country Invitational

Almost exactly one year ago, the Sandhills Community College men’s and women’s cross country teams competed for the first time in the sport at the Chick-Fil-A Invitational hosted by Catawba University.

Back at the same Salisbury Community Park course on Saturday, sophomore Daniel Taylor finished second (26:56.5) in the 8K men’s race to lead the Flyers to a third place finish in the field of 10 otherwise NCAA Division II and III teams.

Sophomore Enya Dewars was the first Lady Flyer to cross the finish line in the 5K women’s race. She came in 34th (25:20.4) and the team was ninth out of 12.

A year ago, the Flyer men finished in fifth place as a team and the women came in 11th.

“We are ahead of where we were last year at this time,” Flyers’ coach Jef Moody said on Sunday.  “We just need to keep racing.”

Next on the schedule is the Adidas XC Challenge at Wake Med Soccer Park in Cary on Friday, September 14.

Taylor, a product of Union Pines High School, came in 17th at the Chick-Fil-A last year and improved his time on Saturday by almost a minute and a half.  He is coming off a spring season that included wins in the 5,000 and 10,000 meters runs at the NJCAA Division III Track and Field Championships in Utica, N.Y. last May.

Catawba’s Javier Alejandro finished 12 seconds ahead of Taylor on Saturday. The Catawba men and women both finished in first place as teams.
