Flyers harriers celebrate after the 2017 Region X Championship.
Flyers harriers celebrate after the 2017 Region X Championship.

The newly minted Sandhills cross country teams added another first over the weekend when they traveled to Spartanburg, SC and Milliken Arboretum to participate in their first Region X Championship meet. And compete they did. The men, once again paced by Daniel Taylor, turned in numerous PR's and the team's lowest average time of the season at 2:23:47. Taylor led the way running the 8K course in 27 minutes flat followed by Daniel Hagan's 28:54.

The meet included all Region X teams regardless of classification with the results split between DI and DIII teams. The men's and women's Flyers teams were the only full DIII sqiads entered. Overall SCC's men's team times earned a second place team position.

On the women's side Karen Munoz, SCC's leader in each event this Fall, again led the Flyers with a time of 22:17. Her efforts on the 5K course were followed closely by Enya Dewars (24:04), Sara Lindell (24:54), Izzabella McNeil (25:27), Anjel Rowe (27:50), Yesica Upson, (28:32), Caitlin Blue (32:14) and Claudette Smith (32:24).

Next up for both Flyers team is the final first of the 2017 season, a trip to the NJCAA DIII National Championship in Westfield, MA Saturday, November 4. Holyoke Community College will play host to the event at Stanley Park.

In addition to Taylor's effort SCC's men's finishers were: Daniel Hagan 28:54; Chance Goodman 29:06; Andrew Bowen 29:06; Isaiah McGilvary 29:41; John Grimm 30:09; Temaris Hailey 30:18; Jaime Torres 30:30; Ivan Benjume 36:34; Noah Brooks 45:09.
