Lindell Qualifies for Nationals in Steeplechase with Performance at Mount Olive

The Sandhills Community College women's track and field team finished 11th out 13 teams at Mount Olive's Trojan Challenge last Friday and Saturday.

Highlights for the Lady Flyers included a third place finish by Sara Lindell in the 3,000m steeplechase with a national championship qualifying time, a seventh place finish in the 400m hurdles by Anjel Rowe and a personal best throw in the discus by Emily Doorey.

Lindell, a product of Union Pines High School, knocked 48 seconds off her time from the week before at UNC-Pembroke.

"If we can get some good training in she might be a contender at nationals," Coach Jef Moody said on Monday. "She's fired up about it."

Coming off meets in consecutive weeks, and with the next meet at North Carolina A&T two weeks away, Monday's workouts were light for most of the athletes.

"Everybody's legs are kind of beat up from the last two weeks so we are calling this a recovery week," the coach said. "We'll get back to work next week and after that we'll head for A & T. We have to keep everybody healthy."

While most of the rest of the team was easing off, Doorey, and Alex Worley of the Flyer men's team, were working hard in preparation for their demanding events this weekend at High Point University. Doorey is competing in the heptathlon and Worley in the decathlon.

Doorey was feeling good about beating her PR in the discus by five feet at Mount Olive.

"Coach just wants us to work on technique so we're prepared," she said as she totted an 8.8 pound shot put ball toward the range at Pinecrest.

The seven events that make up the heptathlon are: 100m hurdles, high jump, shot put, 200m, long jump, javelin and 800m.
