Lady Flyers Drink From Eagles Cup in First Win

Lady Flyers Drink From Eagles Cup in First Win

The Sandhills women's golf team bested a field including representatives from five other Region X junior colleges over the course of a steamy two days in Raleigh, NC. The Eagles Cup victory marks the first on the young season for the young lady Flyers. Their roster includes five freshmen and one returner. One of those first year players, Parker Watson, shared medalist honors with Richard Bland's Kenedi Byrd. The Flyers dominated the field with all five ladies placing in the top seven. Danielle Washburn posted a 132 (93-39) to place solo third. Amanda Hill (94-39) and Sarah Phelan (93-40) tied for fourth one stroke behind Danielle. Tala Locklear rounded out the SCC scoring in seventh place with a 142 (91-51).

The tournament was shortened Sunday to 27 holes amid concerns of finishing. There were several unique challenges over the course of the weekend Watson discussed, "Golf is never easy when you are playing in the hot sun and you have to wait on each tee. However, I tried to remind myself before each shot to concentrate and refocus. There were plenty of times where I would lack patience. However, I had to remember that golf is about timing and mental stability so I did my best to stay positive and to play my game, no matter the conditions."

The ladies have a couple weeks to prepare for the Myrtle Beach Intercollegiate at Lion's Paw October 3-4. The tournament is hosted by Lenior Rhyne College and Lincoln Memorial University.
