Flyers Men and Women Golfers Pull Away from Field on Day Two of NJCAA Nationals

Flyers Men and Women Golfers Pull Away from Field on Day Two of NJCAA Nationals

Led by sophomore Noah Maness with a 3-under par 69, the Sandhills Community College men's golf team expanded its lead over second place Georgia Military College to 18 strokes through the first 36 holes of the NJCAA Division III Mens Golf Championship on Wednesday in Chautauqua, NY.

Wednesday's 4-under par team score of 284 also included a 2-under 70 by Ben Read, a 72 by Watcharakan Chankarn and a 73 by Alex Martin. The Flyer's fifth player, Logan Hay, posted a 74.

Maness bounced back in a big way from an opening round 78 with his lowest score as a member of the Flyers.  Through 36 holes, Martin leads the field in birdies with 10 followed by Read and Chankarn with nine each, and Maness with seven.  Coach Gus Ulrich's squad is pursuing its third consecutive national title and the fourth in the history of the men's golf program.

Competing as individuals in the women's championship, the Lady Flyers led by Coach Herb Pike were again paced by sophomore Trinity Ahing who retained the top spot through two rounds by following up Tuesday's even-par 74 with a 1-under 73. Teammates Ava Ray and Scotty Foley are in second and third place, respectively after shooting a pair of 76's.

Ahing, nine, Ray, eight and Foley, four, have combined to record a total of 21 birdies through 36 holes of play.

In the second year of the DIII women's championship, Oxford College of Emory (GA) leads the only other women's team, RCSJ- Gloucester (NJ), by 53 strokes.  In all, 17 women are competing for individual honors.

The men's field includes 11 teams and 67 golfers.  Both tournaments will resume play early Thursday morning with the tournaments winding up on Friday.
