Flyers Seek Three-peat as NJCAA Dlll Men's Golf Champions

The Sandhills Community College men's golf team began its journey to Chautauqua, NY on Saturday in pursuit of a third NJCAA Division III national title in a row.
Practice rounds are planned for Coach Gus Ulrich's squad on Sunday and Monday at the Chautauqua Golf Club course before the four-day 72-hole event gets underway on Tuesday. The Lady Flyers coached by Herb Pike will compete in the women's event that is being held concurrently (see separate story).
Tee times for all four days will begin at 9 a.m on the first and 10th holes.
Sophomores Alex Martin, Logan Hay and Noah Maness, and freshmen Ben Read, Supanat Rvjiranan and Watcharakan Chankarn make up the Flyers' tournament team. Only Martin, and Hay, who went as an alternate, but didn't play, made the trip to Chautauqua a year ago.
Among the teams challenging the Flyers bid for a three-peat is a Georgia Military College squad that nipped the Flyers by a single stroke for the 2019 title and were runner-ups the last two years. Both teams will be seeking their program's fourth national title. The 2020 tournament was canceled because of COVID.
Andreas Huber was the medalist as the Flyers took a 19-stroke lead after the opening round on the way to an 89-stroke victory over Georgia Military last June. Huber, Martin, Austin Wood, Carson Witherspoon and Adam Hathaway all earned All-American honors for the Flyers. The team's 72-hole score of 1,173 was the second lowest since the inception of the Division lll championship in 1990.
In late April, as a member of the Greensboro College team, Huber was the runner-up at the USA South Conference tournament.
Read, who is from Banchory, Scotland, earned medalist honors in two of the Flyer's four spring tournaments while posting a stroke average of 73.2. Martin was second on the team with an average of 75.5.
Golfstat ranks the Flyers third among NJCAA Division II and III teams behind Kirkwood CC (Iowa) and South Mountain CC (AZ). Those two teams finished first and in a tie for third place respectively, at the recently completed Division II Championships held in Plymouth, IN. Chautauqua Golf Club has hosted the Division III tournament since 2000.
