Lady Flyers and Yetis Trade Sweeps in Shelby

The Sandhills Community College volleyball team had to settle for a split of its double match against Cleveland CC in Shelby on Friday.

The Lady Flyers, now 6-5 on the season, defeated the Yetis 25-15, 25-14 and 25-22 in the early afternoon opener. Led by outside hitters Dajsha Fields and Caroline Bradford with nine kills each, they recorded a season-best kill percentage of .253. The were also sharp on the serving line with 11 aces to go with only one service error.

Libero Lainey Mullins was the leader in digs with 12. She and defensive specialist Alyssa Maragelis were each credited with three service aces. Middle hitter Cassidy Jewett contributed seven kills and six solo blocks. Setter Sydney Garner added 21 assists.

It was a different story for the No. 5 ranked in NJCAA DIII Lady Flyers in the closely contested second match as the DII home team, now 3-6 on the season,  prevailed 27-25, 25-23 and 25-21.

Jewett was the leader in kills with eight for a Lady Flyers squad that was off the mark in the hitting department. Garner was credited with 25 assists and a team-high 16 digs. Mullins and Emma Brown were in double figures with 15 and 10 digs respectively. Middle hitter Ny'Asia McKinnon led in solo blocks with four.

The two teams also split with each other in a double match held at The Hangar on August 18.   Coach Alicia Riggan's squad continues a busy month of September on the road with a 6 p.m. match at Lenoir CC next Thursday.
