Lady Flyers Win Streak Snapped at Four by Lancers

The Sandhills Community College volleyball team's four-match winning streak was snapped on Saturday afternoon with a 26-24, 25-19 and 25-14 sweep by USC Lancaster at The Hangar.

The Lady Flyers went 2-1 at the two-day Flyer Invitational and take an overall record of 5-3 into Tuesday's 6 p.m. home match against Wake Tech (1-1).

Another large and enthusiastic crowd on Saturday included members of The O'Neal School volleyball team.

"The fans have been awesome this weekend," said Coach Alicia Riggan. "You've got to give them something to be excited about and they've have been really hyped, and frustrated the other teams."

A back and forth first set found the Lancers winning 26-24, after a Flyers' kill, that would have tied it at 25, was overturned.

"The game point call really changed the course of the game," said Riggan. " I was really hoping we would come into the second set with a fire lit underneath us, but it seemed like we just started out the next two sets really flat."

Libero Lainey Mullins led the Lady Flyers in both digs with 21, and service aces with three. Middle hitter Cassidy Jewett led the team in kills with seven followed by outside hitters Caroline Bradford and Dajsha Fields with six and five respectively.

With three wins in the two days, the NJCAA Division I Lancers improved to 6-2. The teams will meet again on October 14 in Lancaster, SC.

In Saturday's opening match, Johnson and Wales defeated Mid Atlantic Christian.

"I'm hoping that we regroup on Monday," Riggan said. "We're back home on Tuesday, and hopefully we'll create the energy that we were lacking this weekend."
