Lady Flyers Sweep Titans, Host Tri-match on Saturday

The Sandhills Community College volleyball team fell behind early in each of the first two sets at Guilford Tech on Thursday before bouncing back strong to sweep the Titans 25-23, 25-18 and 25-10.

The Lady Flyers take a record of 7-8 into Saturday's tri-match on High School Senior Day at The Hangar. The Titans from Jamestown dropped to 1-8 with the loss.

"It was a great win and everybody got to play tonight," Coach Alicia Riggan said. "We're excited to be back, playing at home on Saturday."

The Lady Flyers face Patrick Henry CC (1-3) at 11 a.m. in their Region 10 conference opener.  Patrick Henry takes on Division II Louisburg College (6-4) at 1 p.m. followed by the Lady Flyers vs. Louisburg at 3 p.m.

Against a Titans squad they swept at home last month, the Lady Flyers trailed 15-10 in the first set before the first of six service aces in the match by L'Asia Jackson initiated the comeback. They went ahead for the first time at 17-16 on a kill by JaLasia Ray.

The advantage grew to 23-17 before the Titans scored six points in a row to tie it up, but the Lady Flyers stiffened to take the 1-0 lead.

Trailing 9-2 in the second set, the Lady Flyers drew even at 10-10 on a kill by Dajsha Fields.  Later, consecutive aces by Jackson helped build a 19-16 lead. The final two points came on kills by rightside Madison Brower.

A 5-0 start in the third set included kills by Ray and KeKe Lawrence, and a service ace by Alexis Hinson. The home team never got any closer as the Lady Flyers completed the sweep.

The tough-serving Flyers recorded 14 service aces for the second match in a row with Lawrence, Lannah Huneycutt and Hinson also getting into the act.. The statistical leaders for the winners included Huneycutt with 16 assists to go with eight digs. Jackson was credited with 12 digs.

The leaders in kills were Lawrence with eight, Madison Brower with seven and Ray with five.

In addition to Patrick Henry, the other teams, making up the six-team Division III, Region 10 conference include Caldwell Tech, Central Carolina CC, Rockingham CC and Southwest Virginia CC.

In between matches on Saturday, the Lady Flyers will hold a meet and greet for the high school senior volleyball prospects in attendance.
