Eagles Top Lady Flyers in Five Sets

The Sandhills Community College volleyball team was defeated 25-23, 19-25, 25-21, 24-26 and 6-15 by Wake Tech on Tuesday evening in Raleigh.

The Lady Flyers (6-8) travel to Jamestown on Thursday for a 6 p.m. match against Guilford Tech (1-7).

In a match where they recorded a season-high 14 service aces, two by Lannah Huneycutt, and one by L'Asia Jackson, accounted for three of the Lady Flyers final six points as they eked out the first set win.

Two of the points, including the set-winner, came on kills by KeKe Lawrence.

Tied at 1-1, another ace by Huneycutt helped the Flyers jump out to a 5-0 lead in the third set. They built their lead to as many as 10 points on the way to taking a 2-1 lead.

With the opportunity to close out the match, Coach Alicia Riggan's squad fell behind 23-10 before scoring 14 of the next 15 points to knot it up at 24-24. The last five points came on three aces in a row by Alexis Hinson followed by set-tying kills by Huneycutt and Olivia Barlowe. But the Eagles scored the next two points sending the match to the tie-breaker set.

A service ace by Jackson gave the Flyers a 3-0 lead, but the Eagles, now 7-1 on the season, caught up and closed out the match by scoring eight points in a row.

The leaders in kills for the Lady Flyers were JaLasia Ray with nine and Lawrence with seven. Huneycutt recorded 17 digs and 16 assists. Mackenzie Swett was credited with three block assists.

In addition to 19 digs, L'Asia Jackson accounted for four of the team's service aces. Huneycutt and Hinson were credited with three each.
