Lady Flyers Split two Matches on Day One in SC

The Sandhills Community College volleyball team is halfway through playing four matches in a period of 24 hours at the SMC Invitational after defeating Bryant and Stratton (VA) 3-0 on Friday morning and falling to host Spartanburg Methodist CC by the same count in the afternoon.

The Lady Flyers (2-1) complete their visit to South Carolina on Saturday with an 8 a.m. match against USC Lancaster CC followed by an 11 a.m. date with USC Union. Both Bryant and Stratton and USC Lancaster are Region 10, Division II members along with Sandhills.

Camryn Lowe helped the Flyers get off to a strong start in the 25-17, 25-18 and 26-24 sweep of Bryant and Stratton. The sophomore setter contributed to an 8-3 lead in the first set by serving for seven points in a row, including two service aces and assisting on a kill by Carley Modlin.

The Bobcats drew even at 14-14, but a kill by Morrigan Denman, and a service ace by Mariah Daffron, helped pull Coach Alicia Riggan's squad ahead for good.

The Flyers held a comfortable lead most of the way in the second set, but had to overcome a 21-15 deficit in the third to close out the match. A service error by the Bobcats followed by a service ace by Modlin started a run of six points in a row.

Later, trailing again at 24-22, kills by Denman and Christen Clontz, and then two service aces in a row by Clontz, closed out the match.

Denman led the winners in kills with 12 followed by Modlin with nine. The assist leaders were Mya Mallard with 13 and Lowe with 12. Lowe also had four service aces. The leaders in digs were Mya Sencenbaugh and Clontz with seven each.

In a match filled with long rallies, all three sets in the 23-25, 23-25 and 24-26 loss to Spartanburg Methodist were up for grabs until the final points.

The Lady Flyers closed deficits to 24-23 in each of the first two sets before falling short. In a third set that was knotted up 15 times, they led 24-23 before the Division I, Region 10 Pioneers scored the final three points to end the match.

Alexus McCrimmon led the Flyers in kills with seven followed by Modlin and Denman with six each. Mallard and Lowe were credited with 12 and 10 assists respectively. The leaders in digs were Denman with 19, Daffron with 14 and Clontz with a dozen.
