Lady Flyers 3-0 After Successful Trip to South Carolina

The Sandhills Community College volleyball team improved to 3-0 with a 25-19, 25-20 and 25-22 sweep of Lenoir County CC, and a 25-13, 23-25, 25-12 and 25-23 victory over host USC-Lancaster in matches held on Saturday afternoon.

All of the Lady Flyers early season wins have come against NJCAA Division II opponents. They entertain another one in Louisburg College at Heins Gymnasium in a 6 p.m. start on Wednesday.

An efficient Paige Garner was credited with 12 kills in just 16 attack attempts in the win over Lenoir (2-1). Libero Erica Groff had 21 digs, and setter Abby Wallace totaled 20 assists and 11 digs. Outside hitter Brooke Sayers added six kills and 20 digs.

Groff had 32 digs against USC-Lancaster in the late Saturday afternoon match against USC Lancaster (0-2). Garner notched 11 more kills, Wallace added 24 assists and Sayers was credited with six service aces.

"We had a few mental moments against Lancaster going four sets instead of three like we did with Lenoir," Flyers' coach Alicia Riggan said. "We've got to get those worked out. Overall I'm excited to be 3-0.

"It was good to play back-to-back matches since we will be playing three next Saturday and two on Sunday in New York.

It's early, but still notable that after the first week of the season, Garner is second in NJCAA Division III statistics with a hitting percentage of .612 (31-for-49) and Groff is second in digs with an average of 6.82 per set.
