Lady Flyers Meet The Storm in One of Saturday's Region X Semis

After winning the first set of the Region X Volleyball Tournament by a comfortable margin at the Hangar Friday afternoon, the Lady Flyers lost their rhythm for a spell in the second against Danville CC.

Tied at 8-8, middle hitter Morgan McCarthy made the Lady Knights pay for a pair of short returns and followed that with two more kills off sets by Cheyenne Brown as the Flyers ran off six points in a row. Brown continued to feed the hot hand and the 5-foot-8 product of Carolina Christian connected three more times during the set.

The Lady Flyers (18-8, 10-3) received good performances all around on the way to a 25-13, 25-9 and 25-11 victory in the first quarterfinal match of the tournament. They will face Davidson County CC (14-8, 10-3), a 3-0 winner over Central Carolina CC at 1 p.m. in the second of Saturday's semi-final matches.

The winner of the third quarterfinal at 9 a.m. on Saturday between Vance-Granville CC and Rockingham CC meets regular season champion Patrick Henry CC in the first semi-final at 11 a.m. The semi-final winners meet for the championship and a berth in the District H Tournament at 3 p.m.

Seeking their first win of the season, Danville had to deal with a balanced Flyer attack that came at it from all angles. McCarthy finished with 13 kills, three solo blocks, five digs and two service aces. Paige Garner and Holly Martindale were credited with eight kills each and Chandler Adams had seven. Brown notched 35 assists.  The leaders in digs were Erica Groff with 17 and Leah Salzwedel with 12.

Sandhills is hosting the tournament, won by Patrick Henry a year ago, for the second year in a row. The Flyers split their two matches during the regular season against both Davidson and Patrick Henry.
