Lady Flyers Meet Vanguard at High Noon on Friday

The largest crowd since the opening of the new Heins Gymnasium about one year ago is expected when the Sandhills Community College volleyball team entertains Vance-Granville CC at noon on Friday.

It has been designated Elementary Day and fifth grade students from the Southern Pines, Pinehurst, West Pine and High Falls elementary schools have been invited to attend. About 30 minutes before the opening serve, freshman MaKenna Parson of the Lady Flyers, and sophomore Christian Lathan of the Flyer basketball team, will speak to the children, encouraging them to read and stressing the importance of reading in their lives.

There will also be a t-shirt giveaway and every child will receive a free bag of popcorn and a bottle of water.

"This is a chance to expose these kids to Sandhills Community College and the opportunities that lie ahead," athletic director Aaron Denton says. "We appreciate Vance-Granville being willing to play us at noon so we could have this game."

On the court, the Lady Flyers (13-7 overall, 7-2 Region X) will be playing their second of four Region X conference matches in a period of four days. They were defeated 21-25, 14-25, 25-21 and 23-25 at Davidson County CC on Wednesday. They wind up regular season conference play with two matches on Saturday in Martinsville, Va. against a Patrick Henry CC squad (16-2, 10-0) that needs one win to clinch the regular season title.

The Lady Flyers had one of their least productive games on the attack in the loss to Davidson (11-8, 7-3). Outside hitter Chandler Adams led the team in kills with nine to go with 10 digs. Setter Cheyenne Brown was credited with 22 assists. Libero Erica Groff contributed 24 digs.

Following a pair of non-conference matches at Piedmont International in Winston-Salem on Tuesday, SCC will host the Region X Tournament next Friday and Saturday.
