SCC Win Streak Comes to an End - Host Rockingham Saturday on Dig Pink Day

The Sandhills Community College volleyball team will try to keep pace with Patrick Henry CC in the Region X standings when it takes on Rockingham CC on Saturday at 1 p.m. on Dig Pink Day at Heins Gymnasium.

The Lady Flyers won the first two sets in a non-conference match at home against USC-Lancaster on Thursday before falling 25-23, 25-19, 16-25, 23-25 and 10-15. The Flyers (11-5 overall) are 5-0 in Region X and Patrick Henry is 6-0 going into the weekend.

The Flyers quickly lost the momentum after taking the first two sets against the Division II Lancers (6-7) from South Carolina. They made a nice comeback to draw even at 22-22 in the fourth set, but could not finish it. The Lancers then jumped out to a 9-3 advantage in the decisive tie-breaker set.

Erica Groff led the home team in digs with 33 followed by Leah Salzwedel with 16 and Chandler Adams with 15. Salzwedel was credited with 32 assists and Paige Garner led in kills with 10 and in solo blocks with five. The loss broke their nine-match winning streak which ties them with the 2010 team for the longest in the program's history.

All of the money raised through the sale of T-shirts, luminaires and donations on Saturday's special day will be used to help with the medical expenses of Liz Ray, a North Moore High School junior, who is battling cancer. Everyone in attendance is encouraged to wear pink and pink ribbons will be handed out for people to wear.

Saturday is also American Girl Doll Day and an American Girl Doll will be given away to a girl 12-and-under between the second and third sets. The first 15 girls 12-and-under at the game will receive a custom Flyers jersey for their doll.

Both Patrick Henry and Sandhills received votes in the last two weekly NJCAA National Rankings (top 10 poll).
