Lady Flyers Split a Pair on DC Trip - Host Wake Tech and Louisburg This Week

The Lady Flyers broke even in two volleyball matches held at Northern Virginia CC (NOVA) in Annandale, Va. on Saturday.

In an 11:30 a.m. start they swept the host team 25-19, 25-17 and 25-20. They were defeated 25-18, 25-13 and 25-20 by Potomac State College in an afternoon contest.

The Lady Flyers take a record of 2-3 into 6 p.m. matches against Wake Tech on Wednesday (Faculty and Staff Night) and Louisburg College on Thursday (Public Service Night).

Playing at one of the NOVA campuses located about 15 miles from Washington D.C., coach Alicia Riggan's squad was very efficient on the attack in the win over Northern Virginia. Paige Garner (17) and Morgan McCarthy (10) combined for 27 kills and setter Cheyenne Brown was credited with 39 assists.

Libero Erica Groff contributed 20 digs and Leah Salzwedel and McCarthy had nine each. Brown and Holly Martindale had three service aces apiece.

It was another story in the loss against Potomac as the Flyers struggled against a 19-5 team a year ago that was loaded with experienced hitters. Garner and McCarthy led the Flyers with nine kills each. Brown contributed 22 assists and Groff had 22 digs.

Afterward the team took a trip into the nation's capitol.

"I thought Game 1 to Game 2 was all about ball control and not playing scared, Riggan said.  "Potomac had some really good hitters and we couldn't seem to regain our composure starting out behind in every set like at WTCC (opening loss at Wake Tech).

"It was a good experience. I just wish we had showed up against Potomac."
