Gilbert Leads Way for Men's Golf at Don Scalf Memorial

Sophomore Grant Gilbert posted a 1-over par score of 71-74-145, and finished in a tie for eighth place individually, to lead the Sandhills Community College men's golf team at the Don Scalf Memorial on Sunday and Monday.

The Flyers finished in a tie for seventh place in the 11-team event won by Averett University at Belmont Lake Golf Club in Rocky Mount.  N.C. Wesleyan, the host school, was the runner-up and Andre Chi of Methodist was the medalist with scores of 70-69-139.

Flyer freshman Stephen Spencer shot an even-par round on the second day and finished in a tie for eighth place with a scores of 76-72-148. Also included in the team score of 307-298-605 for Coach Gus Ulrich's squad were sophomore Nick Agapion, tie-37th, 78-76-154 and Andreas Huber, tie-45th, 82-76-158.

The Flyers' fifth player, sophomore Ted Sluser, finished in a tie for 54th place after rounds of 85-77-162.

Gilbert was coming off the Flyers' Fall Invitational two weeks ago where he earned medalist honors.

"I am very proud of Grant," Ulrich said of the product of Porter Ridge High School who was an honorable mention All-American for his performance at the NJCAA Championship last June. "He continues his good play with a top-10 finish among 70 players. Stephen Spencer shows gritty play and had a nice finish as a freshman."

The Flyers' coach was encouraged by the performance of his team overall.

"Nick Agapion played a real solid round yesterday, but had two bad holes to shoot 76, so his game is coming around which is a positive," he said.  "Andreas Huber is showing signs of playing to his capability and he's very talented.

"The team score of 298 yesterday is closer to where we need to be so overall it was a great experience for us among bigger schools."

According to tournament statistics, Gilbert and Spencer were tied for second for the most birdies (9) and the Flyers were third as a team in that category (29).

The next tournament is the St. Andrews Invitational at Scotch Meadows in Laurinburg on October 6-7.
