Flyers Top Virginia Peninsula

The Flyers cruised past Virginia Peninsula Community College on Saturday afternoon by a score of 104-72. This was the second consecutive win to open a five game homestand for the team.

After allowing only eight points in the first 10 minutes of the game, the Flyers would take a 58-28 lead into halftime. After the break, the Flyers outscored the Gators 46-44 to secure the 32 point win.

"Our challenge was to make it an uptempo game, and we were able to do that," said Coach Mike Apple, "The ball didn't stick, everyone was touching, we were playing inside out and it was easy."

"We did a good job talking on defense," said freshman Damien Robinson, "Coach always tells us we need to talk and work as a team, and that helps us make sure everyone is in the right spot at the right time."

Sophomore forward Ayden Gittens led the team in scoring with 21 points, while also contributing 15 rebounds, while Robinson put up 11 points and 17 rebounds. Sophomore guard Jamori McDougald scored 12 points while also having a team high eight assists. Freshman DeMyron Williams and sophomore Jamal Williams came off the bench and scored 12 points and 10 points respectively.

"We did a good job communicating, being good teammates," said Robinson, "The team goes off of my energy so when they see me playing hard they want to play hard with me.

In addition, every Flyer came in and scored at least four points, which was the first time all season.

"It was pretty neat when in the first half, 11 guys are in the scoring column," said Apple, "The guys are building confidence, DeMyron Williams I thought had a good game for us, Jamal Williams came in and did a good job for us, so that's all confidence building things."

"Our bench players came in ready to play," said Robinson, "Everybody got a little love tonight and if we get that every night we'll be a hard team to beat."

The Flyers resume play on Monday where they take on Hosanna Bible College to cap off Sandhills' MLK Day event, which will see three three high school games precede the Flyers at 5:30.
