Flyers Hold Off Camp’s Second Half Comeback

The Sandhills Flyers took down the Camp Community College Hurricanes 114-107 on Saturday afternoon to advance to 4-3 on the season, and 1-1 in conference play. The Hurricanes, who are in the first season with a basketball program, fall to 4-2, and 1-1 in conference play.

The Flyers got out to an early lead, taking a commanding 56-39 lead into halftime. However, a 68 point second half from the Hurricanes made things interesting late, as they cut the lead to as small as four in the final few minutes of the game. Ultimately, the Flyers were able to prevail.

"You've got to finish what you start," said Coach Mike Apple, "Around the 8-9 minute mark, we just kind of relaxed a little bit, and all credit to Camp, they kept coming. We're going to have our hands full when we go to Camp to play them."

Freshman Damien Robinson's 30 points and 16 rebounds led the Flyers in both categories, while sophomore Isaiah Nelson's five assists led the team. Robinson has now finished with six double-doubles in the last seven games. Freshman Jashaun Torrence came off the bench and shot 5-10 from three and finished with 20 points.

"Damien had some motivation today," said Apple, "Number 14 for Camp was averaging 15 and 12 coming in, and I think that motivated Damien to be ready to play and he certainly was. Great game for a freshman."

"J's been playing with a lot of energy recently, and we want to continue that," said Apple, "He's an excellent shooter."

The Flyers are back at home on Tuesday evening when they host the 3-2 Spartanburg Methodist Pioneers.
