Flyers Dominate Methodist Jayvee

In an impressive display of skill and determination, the Sandhills Community College basketball team soared to victory against the Methodist University JV squad, securing a resounding 113-66 win on Monday evening.

Despite a recent dip from the second to the third spot in the NJCAA DIII rankings, the Flyers came onto the court with a fierce determination to prove themselves. Their performance was nothing short of outstanding, establishing a commanding lead of 51 points at one stage during the game. This victory propels the Flyers to a 3-2 record for the season.

Coach Mike Apple expressed satisfaction with the team's performance, stating, "This win gives us a lot of confidence." However, he acknowledged some lapses in intensity throughout the game, emphasizing the need for consistent effort over the full 40 minutes. Despite these brief lapses, Coach Apple deemed it a crucial and much-needed performance.

Freshman Damien Robinson echoed the sentiment, noting the win's significance in pulling the team out of a recent slump. Robinson said, "We were really in a slump after the two L's, so I feel like this win right here is really going to get us back on track."

The Flyers demonstrated defensive prowess early in the game, allowing only three points in the initial nine minutes. By halftime, they held a commanding 51-26 lead. The second half saw no letup in their intensity as they outscored the Monarchs 62-40.

Robinson attributed the team's offensive success to improved communication, ball movement, and adherence to Coach Apple's strategy. He said, "We're just trusting the system, and it ended up working out tonight."

The electrifying second-half start, marked by a steal followed by a dunk from Zach Riddle, set the tone for the Flyers. Jamori McDougald's tough layup and another dunk from Robinson added to the excitement, propelling the team to an early 6-0 lead in the first 30 seconds.

Sophomore forward Ayden Gittens stood out as the team's leading scorer, contributing an impressive 28 points and eight rebounds. Robinson continued his stellar performance with 25 points and 10 rebounds, marking his fourth double-double in the team's first five games.

Coach Apple praised Robinson's adaptability, noting his transition from football player at Fayetteville State to a standout basketball performer. Additionally, bench players Jashaun Torrence and Demyron Williams made significant contributions with 12 and 10 points, respectively. Chad Kinch's five assists tied Robinson for the team lead.

Looking ahead, the Flyers will face the Patriots of Patrick and Henry Community College on Wednesday evening. The Patriots, with a 2-2 record, are seeking redemption after a recent 82-77 loss against Caldwell Community College. The Flyers aim to carry their momentum forward and continue their impressive run in the season.
