Flyers Falter late in Loss to Bobcats

The Sandhills Community College basketball team let a 12-point lead with seven and a half minutes remaining in the game slip away and was upset 91-86 by Bryant and Stratton College in Virginia Beach on Sunday.

Ranked No. 11 in this week's NJCAA Division II poll, the Flyers dropped to 8-2 overall and 7-2 in Region 10 competition. The Bobcats improved to 3-3 overall and 2-3 in the conference.

The Flyers play away from home again on Monday at 7 p.m. against Lenior CC (0-5, 0-5) in Kinston. They defeated the Lancers 119-70 on February 13 at The Hangar.

The score was tied eight times in a first half that ended with the Bobcats leading 42-40. Trailing 48-46 early in the second, Dharyus Thomas capped an 11-2 run with a three, putting the Flyers in front 57-50 at the 14:10 mark.

Inside 10 minutes remaining in the game, the Flyers made another move to take control. Bryan Quiller took a charge and then turned a baseline drive into a dunk.

In between two baskets by Derreco Miller, who led the Flyers with 24 points, the finish of his own miss by Nasir Johnson gave the visitors their 12-point advantage at 73-61.

About a minute later, Miller received a pass from Corry Addison and turned it into a three-point play, making it 76-67, but the Bobcats responded with a 14-3 run to take an 81-79 lead.

The Flyers went back in front for the last time at 84-83 on a jumper by Keegan Brayboy with 1:25 remaining, but were outscored 8-2 down the stretch.

Also for the Flyers, Corry Addison contributed 15 points and five assists. Other double-figure scorers were Thomas with 11 points and Quiller with 10.

Coach Mike Apple's squad was out-rebounded for only the second time this season 49 to 39.  The Flyers were 1-for-9 from behind the arc compared to 8-for-28 for the Bobcats.
