Flyers Lose in Shootout at Patrick Henry

In a contest that saw both basketball teams make almost two out of every three shots from the field, Sandhills Community College ended up on the short end of a 115-103 decision at Patrick Henry CC Wednesday evening.

The Flyers (7-3) made good on 62.1 per cent of their attempts while the Patriots (5-4) converted on 63.2 per cent. Coach Mike Apple's squad entertains Caldwell Tech (4-4) at 3 p.m. on Saturday at the Hangar.

"We did not do a very good job playing defense," the coach said on Thursday morning. "We had a hard time staying in front of anybody. Because of that they got a lot of confidence early."

Before the Patriot shooters got warmed up, the Flyers took an early 10-point lead, but went into the intermission trailing 52-50. A close game throughout the second half turned dramatically in the home team's favor with about four minutes remaining after a three-point play combined with a technical foul, increased a four-point deficit to nine points.

Chase Morrisette-Barnett was 9-for-13 from the field and finished with a team-high 22 points. Donnie Haith was next with 18 points and led the team with five assists. Three of the Patriots scored 20 or more points led by Brandon Uziewe with 22.

"When you score 103 points and shoot over 60 per cent from the floor you should have a chance to win a ball game," Apple said. "We're going to watch film today and hopefully see the error of our ways."

Sandhills and Caldwell were intense Region X Division III rivals until the Cobras moved up to Division I in 2016. The Flyers were defeated by them 96-91 last January in Hudson.

Flyer Extra – Last week former Flyer and NJCAA All-American Mason Harrell scored 21 points, grabbed nine rebounds and blocked two shots in his home debut for the Winston-Salem State basketball team. The Rams won the game 109-88 over Morris College.  Also on Wednesday, another former Flyer, Cameron Grigsby, scored 19 points and had nine boards for St. Andrews in a 79-70 loss to Columbia International.
