Flyers Fall Under Late Barrage of Threes by Lancers

Lenoir CC rallied from a late 12-point deficit and went on to defeat the Sandhills Community College basketball team 104-99 in overtime on Friday night at the Hangar.

A pair of free throws by Calvin Ahoume had given the Flyers an 86-74 lead with 1:48 remaining in regulation. But a barrage of threes by the Lancers, coupled with missed free throws by the Flyers, forced the extra period.

Three more treys in the first 1:30 of overtime put the visitors in control.

Chase Morrisette-Barnett led the Flyers with 20 points, including five of his team's 14 threes. Ahoume scored 13 points to go with 14 rebounds, five blocked shots, four steals and three assists.

The Flyers dropped their third game in a row and take a 1-3 record into Friday's 7 p.m. contest against New River CC (VA) that is a part of the Flyer Invitational. Central Carolina CC meets Oxford Emory (GA) at 5 p.m.

A doubleheader is also scheduled for Saturday when New River and Central Carolina tip off at 1 p.m. and the Flyers take on Oxford Emory at 3 p.m.

Still feeling the sting of a disappointing loss to Mount Zion the night before, Morrisette-Barnett and Casey Clarkson each drained a pair of threes, and Sayaun Dent made another, as the Flyers jumped out to a 24-11 lead in the first six minutes of the game.

The margin was down to five points when Pinecrest High School grads Donnie Haith and Tyrell Allmond combined to score eight of the points in a 12-3 run that gave the home team a 50-38 lead at the intermission.

A three by Winston Bryan gave the Flyers their biggest lead at 72-55 at the 10-minute mark. Following the free throws by Ahoume with 1:48 remaining, the Lancers' final 15 points in regulation came on four threes plus a trio of free throws awarded because of a foul committed against a three-point shooter.

Other double-figure scorers for the Flyers were Dent with 13 points and Haith with 10. Haith was also credited with a game-high six assists. Tyler Wilson led the Lancers with 23 points.

Forty-one percent of the shots hoisted by the two teams were from behind the arc. The Flyers were 14-for-34 and the Lancers were 15-for-37. The Flyers had not lost three games in a row since December of 2012.
