Cheryl Brewer

Cheryl Brewer came to SCC as an All-State performer from Chatham Central High School. She continued her success as a basketball player and member of the tennis team at Sandhills Community College. Brewer starred in basketball leading the Spartans winning campaign against primarily four year school competition (including current ACC teams). She scored season highs of 38 and 41 points during the 1973-74 season. After her two year college triumphs Brewer transferred to Appalachian State University where she competed on the basketball, golf and field hockey teams. As a coach at North Moore high school Brewer’s softball team remains the school’s only state championship team. She coached softball for 18 years, women’s basketball for 14 and also coached cross-country, golf and volleyball. As a coach she earned the NCHSAA’s Doris Howard Female Coach of the Year award in 2004. Brewer’s 25+ years of service and success earned her an induction into the NC High School Athletic Director’s Association Hall of Fame in 2006.

Larry McNeill

Larry McNeill enters the Hall of Fame as a coach, longtime English professor and contributor to Sandhills Athletics. An athlete at Hoke High School McNeill continued his career at Davidson College where he lettered in track and cross country – he was captain of the cross country team. Prior to coming to SCC McNeill coached golf at Dreher HS in Columbia, South Carolina. At SCC McNeill was head coach of the golf team and later an assistant for both the golf and tennis teams. McNeill has served Sandhills CC for almost 50 years. McNeill was a charter member of the Sandhills Community College Athletic Advisory Committee formed with the restart of Sandhills Athletics in 2008. He recruited NACDA Hall of Famer and former Rutgers AD Fred Gruninger as well as John McPhaul and Dr. Pat Henderson. The committee laid the foundation for the Flyers successes as well as paved the way for the current expansion of the Dempsey Student Center’s Heins Gymnasium. McNeill’s wife, SCC Foundation board member Mary Margaret, will present him.

Walt Reaves

Walt Reaves is regarded as one of the best athletes to ever play at Sandhills Community College by former coaches, administrators and fans. He excelled as a guard/forward on the basketball team and as a pitcher/first baseman on the baseball diamond after being recruited to SCC by Hall of Famer Pete Garner. After leading the Spartan squads for two seasons Reaves played basketball for two successful years at Roanoke College in Virginia. He was the team’s leading scorer his senior season. Next for Reaves was an honorable 22 years of service in the US Army where he retired as a Master Sergeant. The Army provided an unlikely avenue to continue his athletic pursuits as Reaves played on four All-Army basketball teams and 15 All-Army softball teams. The All-Army teams compete against teams from the other branches of the armed forces. Reaves also earned a spot on the All-Armed Forces team which competed internationally. Former SCC teammate Ted Raye will be presenting Reaves.

Robert Robinson

Robert Robinson’s career has bounced back and forth from athletics to successful business stints in business as well as places near and far. The one consistency remains success wherever Robinson goes. He was a standout middle infielder for the Spartans out of nearby Hamlet high school. Playing primarily second base Robinson was a captain and All Conference performer first at Sandhills (1974) and later at St. Augustine’s University in Raleigh (CIAA 1976). Successful work in the banking business brought Robinson back to North Carolina. Later, upon returning to Raleigh Robinson coached the St. Aug Falcons baseball team for five years. Regarded as one of the highest alumni honors at SCC, he was recognized as the Sandhills Community College 1997 Distinguished Alumni.  Robinson’s high school baseball coach, the NC Sports Hall of Famer, George Whitfield, will present him.

Terrell West

Terrell West was a successful coach, athletic director and physical education faculty for the Sandhills CC Spartans from 1968-1976. During West’s time in athletics West coached four sports including most notably tennis. He also coached men’s soccer, track and field and men’s basketball. A Lexington, NC native, West attended Appalachian State University where he was a varsity athlete with the swimming & diving program as well as running track and field. After completing his masters at ASU, where he also worked as an assistant basketball coach under Bob Light, and a short stay at Milford, West headed to Pinehurst to begin a successful stint at Sandhills. West was introduced to tennis through a summer job at CCNC arranged by Jim Reid, a member of the inaugural Hall of Fame class. In addition to mentoring successful tennis players and future professionals at SCC West developed an excellent tennis game of his own. He is a five-time North Carolina state tennis champion with his most recent championship coming this year. After Sandhills West completed his service in the NC community college system at Blue Ridge CC first as a faculty member in the PE department and then as head of the Brevard/Transylvania campus. West’s longtime coworker – and inaugural Hall of Fame inductee - Ruth Bondurant will present West.
